WC0801 Work with Native American Communities: Lessons Learned from Indian Country, Advanced
Description
This course focuses on successful design processes used for the development of several historic, entertainment, and commercial sites done with the Point Gamble S'Klallam tribe. A tribal museum entrance with the Tulalip tribe of Puget Sound and the Battle Point Historic Site and Culture Education Center of the Leech Lake Band of the Ojibwe in Minnesota are included. The social, cultural, and physical components of this American Indian culture are discussed.
Objectives
Using evidence and processes discussed in the course, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe successful design processes used when working with Native Americans that contribute to their cultural and physical well being.
2. Express an approach to design that emphasizes building cultural competency so diverse cultural norms, actions, and precedents that affect their health and well being are included in the design process.
3. Identify Native American issues and concerns related to landscape design in ways that express safe physical environments that support their well being.
