Description
Desiging places that do not carry the negative attributes associated with the term institutional will be explored. The architectural cues and design factors that make places desirable to inhabit or places that function as oppressive environments are examined as is the influence they have on human well being. You will identify mechanisms that enable occupants to read environments, use architectural features that contribute to control by inhabitants, and to develop individual identity.  These issues contribute to people’s health and well being in various environments. You will focus on increasing people’s well being by the creation of appropriate types of social interaction and community development in built environments.
