WC0802 Toward Culturally Sensitive Housing – The Case of Hmong and Somali Refugees
Advanced
Description
Culturally sensitive housing design is investigated for two immigrant cultures, the Hmong and Somali. Many physical housing characteristics, especially in affordable housing, do not support the cultural, social, and emotional needs of immigrant or displaced populations. In turn, this affects residents’ health and safety as many physical features of the house do not support cultural daily activities such as cooking and bathing. Examples of ways to create culturally sensitive housing are presented that influence residents’ well being.
